The term ‘maxillo-facial’ may initially sound as a tongue twister, but in reality indicates a very delicate region of the human body; it literally means ‘jaws and face’ and is used as a prefix in maxillofacial surgery (a medical and dental specialty) or maxillofacial trauma (facial trauma). Trauma or injuries to the face have important functional, aesthetic and social consequences, and it remains to be a worrisome problem for healthcare services around the world. Especially in Pakistan, where despite legislation on kite flying, helmet and seat belt wearing, lack of implementation tools result in a large number of patients with injuries to the jaws, cheekbones, nose, around the orbit and the forehead, with problematic complications.
It was with these thoughts that the Rotary Club of Rawalpindi Rawal and the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Margalla Institute of Health Sciences, Rawalpindi organized a study day on this very important topic on Monday, 9th August 2010. The study day was a full day Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity and ran from 9:00 AM in the morning to 5:30 PM in the evening where leading experts in the fields of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Plastic Surgery shared their experiences with their colleagues, trainees and doctors from related specialties. It was well attended by a large number of specialists and specialty trainees from the specialties of Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Trauma Surgery, ENT, Anaesthesia and Radiology.
